2013 Love Notes: Pitchers

At the end of 2008, when the blog was still pretty new, I wrote an end of the year wrap-up on each player in the organization. For the last few years I’ve written “love notes” instead of a semi-objective wrap up for each player, because let’s be real, I don’t want to read a fan’s analysis of front office decisions and you probably don’t either. That’s why you’re here! haha

Here are short little notes to the boys from one of…well, I used to say biggest fans, and now I’m going to say one of their most optimistic fans. (Man, sports fans can be hateful.)

Pitchers today, position players tomorrow. Names were taken from baseball-reference.com and they’re sorted alphabetically by first name, not by favorites.

Dear BabyfaceAlex,

Your funky delivery and left-handedness confused a lot of hitters, and that was really fun to watch. Hope you’ll spend all of next season in Atlanta.

Love,
Lauren

#38

Dear Varv,

I’m still pretty mad they made you do rookie hazing. This was your fourth season! Thanks for being so dependable this season – we really needed you.

Love,
Lauren

Dear Beachy,

We were sorry to hear about your second surgery for cleanup, but don’t worry, you’ll bounce back. Look at how many surgeries Smoltzie had! Also, the hair. You’re not Samson. It looked much better short.

Love,
Lauren

Dear CoryGearrin,

I hope your arm stays live all next season – we’ll be better with a sidearmer in the pen!

Love,
Lauren

#57

Dear Cory Rasmus,

You weren’t here long enough to get a nickname, but thanks for being valuable enough for us to get Scott Downs. I like him. Good luck in Anaheim.

Love,
Lauren

Kimmeh!

Thank you for throwing my friend a ball in Philly, being such a reliable closer, and earning your third consecutive All-Star selection. I hope that’s #3 of 20, and I hope they’re all in a Braves uniform. I have every confidence that you can overtake Rivera’s records. On a lighter note, it’s really cute when you wave your glove at little kids in the stands.

Love,
Lauren

Dear Cristhian,

Get well soon! I kinda miss seeing you spit in your cap.

Love,
Lauren

#48

Dear DCarp,

You were a pleasant surprise this season, and I’m sorry the last game ended the way it did. I loved seeing all your teammates hug you in the dugout at the end of Game 4. I’m also sorry some fans called you “chunky” – you aren’t fat at all.

Love,
Lauren

Dear David Hale,

I don’t have a nickname for you yet, since you only appeared in a few games, but I really appreciate your 0.82 ERA saving our butts in September. Can’t wait to see more!

Love,
Lauren

Dear EO,

Your Egraph was the high point of the season for me and your Tommy John was the low point. When Jonny had his surgery I thought, “Well, that was sort of expected. At least I still have EO.” Then your surgery was announced, and I sort of checked out of the 2013 season. (This is a really sad “love note”. I’m sorry.) You’re awesome and I hope you heal well, regain your dominance, and re-sign with my team. We need you here.

Love,
Lauren

Lauren: Is EO’s too sad?
Susan: Awwwwww. Everything feels a little sad today.
Lauren: WELL I WAS SAD ABOUT EO THIS YEAR. Except the Egraph, that was awesome and scary.
Susan: Maybe brighten it a little by mentioning seeing him in the dugout a bunch.
Lauren: Yes, that was great. He spent more time on the rail than he spent on the bullpen bench the last 3 years. (I'd probably want to sit in the back room with the AC watching the game on TV too, instead of on the bullpen bench.)

Dear Freddy #3,

Thank you for kicking some butt at the end of the season and basically saying, “save it, nerds” to all the fans who were critical of your career numbers. Stats aren’t everything, you proved them wrong, and it was really fun to watch. You can stay.

Love,
Lauren

#52

Dear Walden,

The hop thing is weird. Thanks for giving my ADD eyes something else to watch while you pitch; I genuinely appreciate it.

Love,
Lauren

Juliooooooo!

Thanks for being a solid spot in our rotation. I’m glad they didn’t trade you away, and I hope you’ll stay in our rotation for a long time.

Love,
Lauren

Dear Kameron Loe,

Your face resembles my high school boyfriend, who was almost your same size. It’s weird for me.

Love,
Lauren

#54

Dear Meds,

That “good game baby” commercial was really cute, even though it wasn’t your actual baby. Glad you’ll be here next year, too.

Love,
Lauren

#43

Dear Luis,

You really stepped up this year, and everyone loves you. Your tweets probably help. I’m glad you’ll be here next year too.

Love,
Lauren

#20

Dear Ayala,

Your pitching was a pleasant surprise at the end of the year. Whether you stay with us or move on, best wishes to you.

Love,
Lauren

Dear MikeMinor,

Hi, how’s my favorite starter today? Good? Good. You’re awesome.

Love,
Lauren

[this is the point where I hit a wall and had to take a break for a few days. sorry Mike. you deserve a better note. you really are my favorite starter, but I think you know that already.]

#28

Dear Maholm,

I had a hard time reading your moods. No, that’s not the right way to say it. Some days you seemed happy, and other days you looked like you were going to murder some people. It was unnerving.

Love?
Lauren

#32

Dear Scott Downs,

When you made your first appearance as a Brave, I immediately liked you because you made everyone laugh. Didn’t really care how you pitched after that; humor goes a long way with me.

Love,
Lauren

#15

Dear Huddy,

Please come back. I can’t imagine a Braves team without you.

Love,
Lauren

Honorable mention because he didn’t throw a pitch in 2013: #39

Dear Jonny,

I hope you heal well and have much success next year. This season was horrible without you making opponents look ridiculous while they struck out. Oh yeah, and I heart you. :)

Love,
Lauren

PS – I’m still mad they didn’t announce you OR let you run out with the team on Opening Day.

Hot Dog Brander

Oh, I thought of one more thing... they call it a "BBQ brander". There's a difference between barbecue and grilling. But if you really want to buy this thing, you can click its picture above. :)

The Braves thank the fans

The team usually does some sort of end-of-season wrapup video. All the ones in recent memory have a twinge of sadness about them, since we didn't win our last game and other teams are still playing baseball. Here's 2013's video...

I just returned from the beach. I was so exhausted that I prayed for a "break" last Wednesday, and I didn't expect such an immediate answer to my prayer...I lost my job 4 hours later. My family was already at the beach so I joined them, and the week off was exactly what I needed.

I still owe y'all three games of gameday pics, and the annual Love Notes are 1/4 finished. Let's all hope 2014 is better to us than 2013 was. :)
